Polar Molecule: A Basic Guide

So to start with, polar molecule definition states that the polar molecule contains a set of polar bonds which are made because of the difference in the electronegativity of the bonded atoms in the molecule. For example, if we consider a water molecule, the molecule contains hydrogen atom and anoxygen atom. The hydrogen atoms are positively charged and the oxygen atoms are negatively charged and thus the bond created between them are polar bonds.


Polar Molecule Definition also states that there are multiple polar bonds in water molecules and thus the geometry of the molecule is not symmetric. If the geometry had been symmetric, the charges would have canceled each other but in such a case, the charges do not cancel each other which results in a net charge.

Another fact about polar molecule is that polar molecule interacts with help of dipole-dipole intermolecular forces and these interactions are also accompanied with hydrogen bonds. The polarity of the molecule is also responsible for many physical properties as the polarity largely impacts the surface tension of the liquid, melting point and the boiling point of the liquid and at last, it also impacts the solubility of the liquid. The difference between the electronegativity of the polar bonds in the polar molecule is 0.5 to 2.0.

Most of the O-H (Oxygen – Hydrogen) bonds are polar bonds and any molecule containing such bonds are polar molecules whereas the non-polar molecules have a C-O2 (Carbon – Oxygen)bond are non-polar bonds. This principle of polar and non-polar molecule is used in finding the polar and non-polar solvents as the same has a wide application in chemical industry
